Appraising Aquaculture: The ZALA Park Fish Cultivation and Makoba Integrated Mariculture Pond System OceanDocs
Ngazy, Z.M..
This paper gives results of the preliminary socio-economic survey conducted in two coastal villages of Zanzibar where coastal aquaculture was still on experimental stage to look for possibilities and potentials for creating a means to supplement the declining fish catch from the wild and poverty reduction in coastal villages of Mungoni (ZALA Park) and Makoba. The sites were previously used for burying coconut husks for rope making and salt pans respectively. Specifically, the paper asses market condition for fish in villages and hotels looking at the local community fish requirements and their perception towards establishment of coastal aquaculture in Zanzibar. Finally it highlights the Cost Benefit Analysis of the ZALA Park fish pond project....

Battling for Corporate Accountability: Experiences from Titanium Mining Campaign in Kwale, Kenya OceanDocs
Ojiambo, E.V..
The debate around the conduct of transnational corporations (TNCs) globally has been lively. Attention has focussed on the growing role of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in ensuring that the TNCs become more accountable. NGOs influence the activities of TNCs in three crucial ways. First, through lobbying and encouraging others to lobby, they have brought pressure to bear on TNCs. Second, they have helped set and enforce regulations and standards to which, at the risk of financial loss, TNCs are keen to aspire. Third, NGOs have helped generate consumer concern to the extent that it is now a company’s long term competitive interest to act responsibly (Mulligan 1999:51).

Caracteristicas de la pesca artesanal en el Partido de la Costa (Cabo San Antonio) y perfil socioeconomico de la actividad. OceanDocs
Lagos, A.N..
There is a lack of scientific information about the artisanal fishery in the de la Costa County (Buenos Aires province, Argentina). Moreover, this artisanal sector does not have fishing statistics because local fishermen are not obliged to hand in fishing reports, where even basic data on catch and fleet effort should be included. The main objective was the analysis of the artisanal fishery in the de la Costa County from the biological, economic and social point of view. One 132 sample stations were analyzed between 56 degree -57 degree W and 36 degree -37 degree S from 1992 to 1999. Moreover, information on the artisanal fleet, environmental conditions and the arrival of tourists to the de la Costa County was also analyzed. Fishing yield (FY) per boat was...

Degradation of the riparian wetlands in the Lake Victoria basin - Yala swamp case study OceanDocs
Thenya, Thuita; Wassmann, Reiner; Verchot, Louis; Mungai, David.
Land degradation is as a result of broad range of scales and factors, which include biophysical, climatic, demographic and socio-economic. The aim of this paper was to provide an analysis of wetland utilisation, ecosystem degradation and their effect on the Lake Victoria (Kenya) ecosystem. This involved analysis of socioeconomic and remote sensed data. The main sources of wetland degradation in the Lake Victoria basin were identified as (1) farming activities, (2) grazing and macrophyte harvesting and (3) coupled with catchment degradation-deforestation. These factors were closely related to the demographic dynamics and unsustainable land utilisation practices. Socio-economic data provided valuable insight on the pattern of wetland utilisation and possible...

Distribution of economic benefits from the fisheries of Lake Victoria OceanDocs
Abila, R.O.; Odongkara, K.O.; Onyango, P.O..
The Lake Victoria fishery contributes immensely to the socio-economic development of the riparian states. The East African Community has designated the lake basin as an ‘economic growth zone’, with the potential to develop into a major economic region. The fisheries are vital in creating employment opportunities, mostly rural-based, thereby helping to reduce rural-urban migration. Fish is also a rich source of animal protein for human consumption and provides raw material (fishmeal) for processing animal feeds. The fish industry contributes to GDP and has continued to be an important source of foreign exchange earned from fish exports. Besides, the fish industry contributes to the national and local government revenues through levying of various taxes,...

Fishing and poverty levels around Lake Victoria (Kenya) OceanDocs
Abila, R.O.; Omwega, R.N.; Lwenya, C..
Fishing is known to be one of the oldest occupations of mankind and in Lake Victoria (Kenya); it has been largely practiced at artisanal levels. Despite this, poverty amongst the fisher folk remains high. Why the fisher folk remain in perpetual poverty was the key research question for this study. Sampling was conducted on 12 landing beaches between June and August 2004. Data was obtained using survey questionnaires; personal interviews were made using open-ended questions and beach observations. Results from this study indicates that 179 fishers sampled earned an average income of Ksh. 107,063 each in a year with modal income of Ksh. 57,600 while in a day they earned an average income of Ksh. 518 each with modal income of Ksh. 200. Fishers perceived that...

Gender, Rights And Poverty Issues:Lessons For The Sector OceanDocs
Harrison, E..
In its 1997 White Paper1, DFID establishes that poverty alleviation is central to its development strategy. The notions of gender and human rights figure strongly as part of this strategy. Gender equality is seen as key to poverty alleviation, as are mechanisms to ensure that basic human rights are met. These principles are also re-iterated by other international organisations in key policy documents such as the OECD s Shaping the 21st Century 2. The international interest in gender, poverty and rights reflects a number of related but not necessarily always compatible concerns. Because women often suffer most from poverty and a lack of ability to exercise their rights, it seems to make sense to consider these three issues together. But this may...

Institutional Arrangements Linking Xporters to the International Fish Market OceanDocs
Njie, M..
The fisheries sector of The Gambia has enormous potentials to contribute towards national socio-economic development. The country is blessed with considerable marine and river fisheries resources whose rational exploitation and utilisation can yield significant benefits to the people and Government. The realisation of the full potentials of fisheries will translate into self-sufficiency in fish production (with surplus for export); employment opportunities for nationals, infrastructure development and substantial revenue and foreign exchange generation through export. Although there are significant developments in the fisheries sector relating to increased production and market development, there are also constraints and obstacles to development and access...

La depredación de la merluza en la Argentina. Incentivos políticos y conservación de los recursos naturales OceanDocs
Litovsky, A..
